COMMUNIQUÉ

Discussions aimed at achieving a just and fair resolution of the residential school legacy, including the settlement of legal claims for compensation, are now under way.

The participants in the discussions are The Honourable Frank Iacobucci, representing Canada, legal counsel for former students, legal counsel for church organizations that were involved in residential schools, the Assembly of First Nations as well as other interested parties.

Various approaches to the settlement of the legal claims have been suggested and are being discussed. No settlement has been reached yet. The discussions are expected to continue for several months.

These meetings are hosted by the Office of the Federal Representative and are attended by the legal counsel for former students across Canada, representatives of church organizations involved in residential schools, and representatives of the Assembly of First Nations and other Aboriginal organizations. Please note that these meetings are ongoing and dates will continue to be added as meeting locations are determined.

In addition, working groups have been established to study issues of Truth and Reconciliation, Commemoration and Healing. These working groups will be meeting on an ongoing basis for the next few months.
